Jonah's Day. Old style date: November 5.

On this day the memory of St. Jonah, Archbishop of Novgorod, Abbot of the Oten Hermitage is celebrated. Jonah was canonized as an all-Russian saint at the Macariev Council in 1549.

In Rus', on the day of Jonah, girls usually prayed to God about how to get married, to live happily and asked to send them good husbands. To get married faster, girls went out into the yard at dawn and scattered small coins and small things made with their own hands around their houses. They said that this would help them attract suitors.

By this day, we finished harvesting the radishes. This vegetable often appeared on the peasant table: radish was consumed either grated, in salads, or cut into thin slices. Radish was usually served with vegetable oil, salt, onion and kvass. A popular dish was sauerkraut with black radish.
