Holger Rune (22 years old, 15 ATP) suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon at the Stockholm tournament a month ago. In an interview for Hard Court, the Dane tells what he went through.

Holger Rune was injured during the semi-final of the ATP 250 tournament in Stockholm. He suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon in his right leg. After a month, the Dane revealed how he feels and how he views this situation in his life.

“Honestly, I think my injury was a real shock to a lot of tennis players and athletes. I had never had problems with my ankle, in fact, I had always been in very good physical condition. I had never had any problems with inflammation, I always had a lot of blood tests, cell tests, scans, MRIs, etc. Everything was fine in terms of my physical condition, the results always showed that I was in very good physical condition.” he said in the interview given to Hard Court.

He continued: “However, this does not mean that such a thing cannot happen, although it should not be possible. At 22, I consider myself a healthy and strong boy, but still this happened to me. I'm not the type to believe in bad luck or luck, that doesn't exist in the world of sports. Everything happens for a reason, there is always an explanation behind every happening“.

Holger Rune believes his injury was caused by fatigue

The Dane also identified the reason: “The main reason why I suffered this injury is fatigue, I am convinced of that. This is a factor that should concern the whole sports industry. Sports is entertainment, we all like entertainment, we like people who are happy to see us play. We have to make sure that everyone has the opportunity to listen to their body, but it is very difficult when you love tennis so much, the competition, the game, the tournaments and each of the fans who come at the arenas”.

Holger pointed out: “I never doubted my love for tennis, but I took my talent for granted. Sometimes I was too indulgent with myself, and now I feel the longing and, looking back, I see all the things I could have and probably should have done differently. Not just training, because that's where my passion lies, but all the things around it – what you eat, etc.”

Can this injury change his behavior? “To reach the top 5 or even higher, to win Grand Slams, you have to be consistent in everything. But life isn't always a straight line to the finish line. Looking at how the last few years have been, maybe I needed this stage in my life, to mature at my own pace. This will affect my ranking, my trophies, but maybe it was necessary. Maybe this was the kick I needed to take my talent more seriously, to prove to myself that I was capable. Honestly, I can't wait to make a qualitative leap”, emphasized the former world number four.
