The activity of the Crystal Dental dental clinic, where a 2-year-old girl died Thursday evening after a general anesthesia, was suspended by the Ministry of Health. Following the control of the State Sanitary Inspection, the clinic received fines totaling 100,000 lei.

“Following the checks, several non-conformities of an administrative nature were found, including the operation of some medical offices located on the ground floor of the building without holding a sanitary operating permit”, announced the Ministry of Health on Monday, at the end of the control.

The control report of the State Sanitary Inspection was submitted to the Prosecutor's Office of the High Court of Cassation and Justice “for analysis and the continuation of legal proceedings”, states the institution led by Alexandru Rogobete.

The Ministry of Health also states that “given the ongoing criminal investigation, the institution cannot provide additional information at this time”: “The Ministry of Health's responsibilities end with the submission of the documentation to the competent authorities.”

Rogobete: “If the clinic had followed all the regulations, that dramatic situation could have been avoided”

The Minister of Health, Alexandru Rogobete, said that the clinic where the girl died was not equipped with a vital functions monitor, defibrillator or oxygen source.

“If that private clinic had respected all the regulations, as they are respected in this building, that dramatic situation could have been avoided. (…) The fact that they worked and that they performed dental interventions and that they gave general anesthesia is their own responsibility and is totally against the law,” Alexandru Rogobete said on Sunday.

The clinic has two premises – one with a sanitary authorization for operation and one in the process of authorization, where the necessary equipment for such an intervention was missing:

“This clinic has two offices: one office that has been operating for 11 years and in which the area is regulated and respects the circuits, sure, they discovered irregularities in sterilization, but the infrastructure in that office allows the granting of general anesthesia, because it complies with the regulations. In the office where this drama took place, unfortunately, the regulations are not respected, and the minimum conditions, the minimum equipment necessary for general anesthesia do not exist.”

Alexandru Rogobete added that the said building did not have a sanitary operating permit:

“This building within the clinic did not have a sanitary authorization to operate. They had technical assistance contracted from the Public Health Directorate for authorization. The fact that they started the medical activity, worse than that, they administered general anesthesia, in an unauthorized space, seems to me to be pure unconsciousness on the part of those who work there.”
