On the other hand, writes ProTV, the Competition Council tries to prevent an artificial increase in prices.

According to agriculture officials, at the center is a misunderstanding between certain retailers and some producers. The traders in question would have abandoned certain contracts and, within a few months, would have ended up in a situation where they no longer had the necessary quantity of eggs to cover the demand.

It happened in the two retail stores where they listed egg producers, farmers, Romanians. Of course, farmers turned to shops from abroad, to the European Union. And of course, at the moment, there is a lack of eggs on the shelves in the two stores. But we cannot consider that Romania currently has a shortage of eggs”said Barbu.

Representatives of the large commercial chains say that some farmers have been attracted by better prices offered by processors and stores outside the country.

The Minister of Agriculture, Florin Barbu, contradicts the idea of a crisis and says that it is possible that there are “unfair commercial practices”.

“There will never be an egg crisis in Romania, because in the last 2 years, through the investments we have made, Romania has a degree of self-sufficiency of 120%. Practically, last year we produced 5.4 billion eggs in Romania and this year I think it will be an appeal and we will exceed this figure. We are doing very well, both internally and externally”, said Florin Barbu, in an intervention on Antena 3.

The minister claims that two retail stores are facing this crisis.

“Why? Because it's a commercial relationship and that's why I think a problem has been created, and here my colleague from the Ministry of Economy, who manages the trade part, must also intervene, but also the Competition Council, which should check why Romanian producers don't have a place on the retail shelves in Romania and have to go to external stores. We produce far more than what is needed for consumption. (…) We have a degree of self-sufficiency of 120% and I I say, and I'm glad, that Romanian producers also go for export. It's possible that there are certain unfair commercial practices and that's why the Competition Council has the necessary powers to enter into these commercial relations between Romanian producers and chain storesit“, stated the minister.
