President Nicușor Dan responded on Sunday to former head of state Traian Băsescu who asked to find a formula for the reunification of the nation, after he said that Romanians are “dispersed” and “hate each other”. “Only the president can do it,” stated Traian Băsescu.

“President Băsescu is right in this matter”, said Nicușor Dan on Romania TV.

Traian Băsescu: “We are a dispersed nation. Only the president can initiate reunification”

Traian Băsescu had stated the day before, on the same television station, that Romanians are “dispersed” and “enemy each other”. The former president called for finding a formula to reunify the nation.

“It's a process that I brought forward during my mandate and it's unresolved. We are a desperate nation. We can no longer be a bloc, a monolith. We, the Romanians, no. We, the Romanians, are scattered. We are enemies. We have made the parties the tools to fight against each other. We must find a formula for the reunification and reconciliation of the nation. Only the president can do it, give the start of this movement”, declared former president Traian Băsescu.

Nicușor Dan: “Real dialogue and time are needed. Tensions do not disappear in two months”

The president criticized the fact that public debate is often reduced to mutual accusations without looking at the real causes of problems.

“The simplest thing is to have an opinion, to say that the magistrates or politicians do nothing, on the other side to say that they are attacking me, the politicians are the ones who do nothing, but it is more difficult to go down and see the mechanisms. If we are talking, for example, about the releases that were ordered this week, by the corrupt. When was the CCr's decision. When you go down and look at the technicalities, it is more difficult. Many politicians never go down and it boils down to a ping pong of statements. In order to solve it, you have to go deep and that's why you need a little time and bring people to a discussion,” said the head of state.

The leader from Cotroceni emphasized that the accumulated tensions cannot disappear quickly and that there is a need for real discussions on the big issues and that the state must regain its credibility in the eyes of the citizens.

“As long as this tension has built up, you can't expect it to disappear in two months, four months. We need to have a real dialogue on the big issues. We need to regain people's trust that the state works for them, and we see that in many areas of it it doesn't work for citizens, it works for certain interest groups. I don't expect this to happen very quickly, but people need to regain trust in social justice. That you can't you fool society without suffering anything. I am convinced that in time we will manage to convince people that there are also people at the level of the central and local administration who work for them”, said Nicușor Dan.
