Moment of silence in memory of Emeric Ienei, before Hungary – Ireland

Before the starting whistle of the match with Ireland, a moment of silence was held in Budapest in memory of Emeric Ienei.

The approximately 60,000 people at Puskas Arena respected the moment and made silence for one of the greatest Romanian coaches in history.

What the Hungarians wrote after the death of Emeric Ienei

“Emeric Ienei was expected to perform a miracle. He was supposed to lead the Hungarian national team at the World Championships in the United States. The coach started well, beating Austria and Ukraine in friendly matches. But in the first round of World Cup qualification, Iceland managed to win at the People's Stadium in Budapest, pulling off a huge surprise.

Iena's departure was already anticipated at the time, but the coach stayed. The autumn did not go badly, the Hungarian team won in Luxembourg and returned home from Greece with an important point.

But even then it was known that the home match against Greece would decide whether Hungary would have a chance of qualification. Afterwards, the Greeks qualified for the World Championship for the first time in their history, and a few days later Emeric Ienei submitted his resignation, which was finally accepted by the Hungarian Football Federation,” wrote the publication Nemzeti Sport, after Ienei's death.
