Marjorie Taylor Greene, once a political ally of Donald Trump, said on Saturday that she was the target of threats after being criticized by the president on social media, reports AFP.
The 51-year-old congresswoman had been a supporter of Trump's Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement, but the president announced on Friday that she was withdrawing her support. He launched further criticism on Saturday, calling her “traitorous” to the Republican Party.
Greene later said in a post on X that she had been “contacted by private security firms with warnings about my safety as a series of threats against me are fueled and encouraged by the most powerful man in the world.”
Greene's sudden change in attitude sparked speculation that she was preparing to run for president in 2028. She dismissed the theory as “baseless rumours”.
Greene accused Trump of trying to intimidate other Republicans ahead of next week's vote on the release of the Epstein files, calling it “amazing how hard he's fighting to prevent the Epstein files from being released, that he's getting to this level.”
On Wednesday, Greene was one of only four House Republicans to join Democrats in signing a petition to force a vote on the release of all Justice Department files related to the late Epstein, accused of sex crimes against minors.
The congresswoman addressed the Epstein scandal in her Saturday morning post as well.
“As a woman, I take threats from men very seriously,” Greene said. “I now understand to some extent the fear and pressure that women who are victims of Jeffrey Epstein and his cabal must feel,” she added.
