It is reported that the program of Zelensky’s visit is not being fully disclosed for security reasons.
The Ukrainian president is expected to first meet with Greek President Konstantinos Tasoulas, and then with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, and later with Parliament Speaker Nikitas Kaklamanis.
During an emergency visit to Greece, Zelensky wants to request from Athens two batteries of Patriot air defense systems and Mirage 2000-5 Mk2 fighters if the Greek side decides to purchase additional Rafale fighters, Pronews reported.
According to media reports, negotiations are underway to purchase 12 aircraft.
In addition, according to Pronews, Zelensky will also ask the Greek authorities for a standard package of weapons and ammunition.
Context
In April, Kathimerini wrote that the United States was putting pressure on Greece, calling for the transfer of a Patriot air defense system battery located in Saudi Arabia to Ukraine. But Greece rejected such plans, Reuters noted.
In early October, Kathimerini reported that the United States and France were forcing Greece to sell Mirage 2000-5 fighter jets to Ukraine. The media noted that Greece has already bought more than 20 modern Rafale fighters from France and, given that technical support for the Mirage 2000-5 will end in 2027, is seeking to get rid of old military aircraft.
