Rallies and demonstrations were banned in the city until March 23, but this did not stop anyone. There are now thousands of students on the streets of Ankara and Istanbul. They broke through the police cordon, and security forces responded with tear gas and batons. Against the backdrop of what was happening, the dollar exchange rate soared from 36.5 to a record 40 Turkish lira in a few hours. The stock exchange crashed along with the lira.
