At least two large Russian regions are facing interruptions in water supply due to shallowing of rivers. Problems have already begun in the Rostov and Yaroslavl regions.
Drought and, as a result, fish death can occur in Rostov-on-Don, Kalach-on-Don, Voronezh, Novomoskovsk, Volgograd, Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod, Saratov, Astrakhan, Balakovo, Zavolzhye and Rybinsk. In the latter, people take walks along the shallow bed of the Volga (on video).
As expert meteorologist Alexander Shuvalov told Mash, the reason for the shallowing of the Volga and Don is a warm winter. Due to the lack of snow and rapid melting, the rivers simply have nothing to fill in the spring. The forecasts are disappointing – only heavy rains can help. According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, low water levels can cause problems with water supply at enterprises and mass fish deaths.
