Ukraine has added Russian President Vladimir Putin's special economic envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, to its sanctions list targeting people accused of crimes against the country, independent Russian publication The Moscow Times wrote on Monday.
Dmitriev was placed on the sanctions list for “spreading propaganda and attracting Russian investment in key sectors of foreign economies,” the Ukrainian presidential office said on Sunday.
Dmitriev, who was born in Kiev, heads the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) and is a member of Russia's negotiating teams with the United States and Ukraine.
He went to the US last month amid President Donald Trump's growing frustration with Putin over the Kremlin leader's refusal to accept a ceasefire in Ukraine.
Dmitriev reacted to Ukraine's sanctions against him in a sarcastic post on Telegram, describing the measures as one of two “rewards” he received over the weekend.
In addition to Dmitriev, Ukraine's latest sanctions also target fellow negotiator Alexander Zorin, as well as Russian Agriculture Minister Oksana Lut, Deputy Education Minister Alexander Bugayev, and Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education Andrei Omelchuk.
The statement issued by the Presidential Administration in Kyiv claims that the targeted individuals “seized agricultural property, grain crops and cultural heritage sites, conducted information operations against our state” and imposed Russian education with anti-Ukrainian messages in the occupied territories.
In a separate decree, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also placed under sanctions five Russian publishing houses accused of spreading propaganda and supporting Moscow's large-scale invasion.
