A well-known man with a history of violence in France was arrested in Brussels on the charge that he tried to hit four police officers with his car, the prosecutor's office in the capital of Belgium informed on Sunday, according to AFP, taken over by Agerpres.

He was imprisoned after being presented to an investigating judge in charge of the investigation for attempted murder.

The facts happened on Saturday morning, when four police officers were conducting a check on a sidewalk near the North Station, in the Schaerbeek district. A vehicle entering the forbidden lane suddenly accelerated towards the agents, who managed to avoid being knocked down at the last moment. The aggressor's car then entered the police car, according to the report provided by the prosecutor's office.

None of the police officers were injured, but all are “very shocked” and will be out of action for several days.

The suspect driver was detained on the spot and it turned out that he was already known to the French authorities. His nationality was not disclosed.

Belgian Interior Minister Bernard Quintin said “the attack on our policemen is an attack on the whole state. Justice must now act severely.” He stated that he conveyed his support to the aggressors.
