General Carsten Breuer warns against shooting down drones over Germany

The Bundeswehr, according to General Breuer, is focusing on methods of disrupting the electronic course of enemy drones, instead of shooting them down. The general noted that a hit drone, like the ammunition used to shoot it down, may fall into an inhabited area, which involves the risk of damage. “The idea is to limit the usefulness of the enemy's drones. Of course, this can be achieved by shooting them down. But then there is a problem, because the hit drone falls to the ground somewhere, just like the ammunition,” Breuer explained in the published conversation.

The general assesses: neither peace nor war
The general also noted an increase in the number of hybrid attacks, including cases of drone incursions into German airspace. In his opinion, Germany is currently in a situation that is neither complete peace nor open war. Breuer, who has been serving in the military for 40 years, admitted that he has never before faced such a serious threat as the current actions from Russia.

Drones over Germany. Chancellor Merz is concerned
The German government coalition, including Chancellor Friedrich Merz, also expresses concern about Russian actions. In recent days, there have been reports of drone swarms over German territory, which have raised concerns among both politicians and intelligence services. The head of the Federal Intelligence Service (BND), Martin Jaeger, warned in the Bundestag in October that the risk of a “heated confrontation” with Russia was real. Last weekend, incidents involving drones even led to a short-term suspension of airport operations in Bremen and Berlin.
