Twin babies with the same congenital heart defect were successfully operated on at the Federal Cardiocenter of Krasnoyarsk Tetralogy of Fallot.

The girls were admitted to a medical facility from Khakassia. The disease was discovered during their mother’s pregnancy, during a routine ultrasound. Tetralogy of Fallot is a heart defect that consists of essentially four defects: ventricular septal defect, pulmonary stenosis, aortic dextraposition and right ventricular hypertrophy. Children with this defect must be operated on at the age of 4-6 months.

Considering that this defect was successfully eliminated, the pregnancy was prolonged and passed without complications, the children were born full-term and on time. However, doctors say thatthat's rare clinical case.

“Tetralogy of Fallot is a common congenital heart defect with a good result from surgical treatment, but twins are extremely rare. Both girls tolerated the operation well, everything went as planned, and we completely corrected the heart defect. After such operations, children do not lag behind in development and have no physical limitations,” explained Pavel Teplov, head of the pediatric cardiac surgery department of the Krasnoyarsk Federal Center for Cardiovascular Surgery.

The girls’ mother, Marina, said that she gave birth in the Krasnoyarsk Perinatal Center, and then completely trusted the doctors Cardiocenter: “On the first day, the diagnosis was confirmed – that Darina and Sabrina had a heart defect. Pavel Viktorovich came, looked at the girls, and said that there was no urgent surgery required, they would need to go to the Cardiocenter when they were 5 months old. He instilled confidence in me that everything would be fine, I trusted him. Of course, I was very scared, but the doctors and nurses supported me so much and helped me. Sabrina was taken away first, then Darina was operated on. I only exhaled when they were both in the room with me… I’m so happy that we’re going home and we’ll all be together.”
