PSD President Sorin Grindeanu reproached Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan and USR Ministers of Defense and Foreign Affairs for how they communicated on the subject of the withdrawal of part of the American troops from Mihail Kogălniceanu. Grindeanu said that Bolojan was more concerned with appointing a deputy prime minister with “anti-American positions”, referring to Oana Gheorghiu.

“Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan has no message on this topic of major public interest and contributes to the deepening of confusion on a bilateral level. His only public concern, these days, was the appointment for the position of deputy prime minister of a person who, even if he has results in the activity of civil society, deepens – through his previously expressed anti-American positions – the doubt in the relationship with the Strategic Partner”, Sorin Grindeanu wrote in a post on Facebook.

“The government should explain what is happening”

Grindeanu claims that it is unacceptable for the population to learn about the Trump administration's decision from the foreign press, before an announcement from the Government or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“The only explanations came, this morning, from the Ministry of National Defense. However, they did not clarify the situation and did not give the certainty of concrete measures that would guarantee a consistent protection of Romania's territory”, believes the PSD leader.

The leader of the social democrats asked the prime minister and the ministers Ionuț Moșteanu and Oana Țoiu to come to Parliament with “a concrete plan to ensure deterrence and defense capabilities on the Eastern Flank”.

“Given that the Pentagon's decision was officially challenged this evening, even in the United States Congress, it is even more the obligation of the Romanian Government to explain what is happening, what guarantees we have and what stages are to come,” Grindeanu wrote.

The Pentagon recalls some of the soldiers from Kogălniceanu

MApN announced on Wednesday morning that Romania and NATO allied countries were informed of the decision of the United States regarding the “resizing” of American troops in Europe. According to MApN, “approximately one thousand American soldiers will remain deployed” in Romania.

The announcement came after the Ukrainian publication Kyiv Post wrote, citing American and European sources, that the Donald Trump Administration is about to withdraw “thousands of American soldiers” from Romania.

The heads of the defense committees in the US Senate, Roger Wicker, and in the House of Representatives, Mike Rogers, both Republicans, signed a joint statement expressing their concern over the Pentagon's announcement regarding the withdrawal of the rotational brigade from Romania, which they say is uncoordinated and in contradiction with President Trump's strategy.

“We firmly oppose the decision not to maintain the American rotational brigade in Romania and the force posture review process that could also lead to further withdrawals of American forces from Eastern Europe,” the two members of the US Congress claim.
