Sometimes the simplest habits turn out to be much more useful than expensive procedures. One such technique is the “legs up” exercise. Just 10–15 minutes before bed can significantly improve your well-being, relieve fatigue, and even have a beneficial effect on sleep and blood circulation.
When you raise your legs above the level of your heart, for example by resting your heels against a wall, blood and lymph begin to circulate more freely. This light drainage effect helps reduce swelling and heaviness in the legs, improve blood circulation, reduce stress on blood vessels, accelerate the removal of fluid and toxins, and alleviate varicose veins and a sedentary lifestyle.
Physiologists note that this position helps venous blood return to the heart faster, and lymph “move away” from stagnant zones. Within a few minutes you will feel the tension leaving your legs and your body relaxing.
How to do it correctly
- Lie on your back next to a wall.
- Raise your legs up and lower them onto the wall to form an angle of approximately 90°.
- You can place your hands along your body, on your stomach or behind your head – whatever is convenient.
- Breathe deeply and calmly.
- Stay in this position for 10–15 minutes.
- If you feel slight numbness, lower your legs, massage lightly and repeat later.
- For comfort, place a small pillow or cushion under your lower back.
When is it useful?
- After a day of work, especially if you sit or stand a lot.
- After training, it helps muscles recover faster.
- For swelling, heaviness and signs of “humming” legs.
- For insomnia, it relaxes the nervous system.
- During times of stress, it helps stabilize breathing and calms.
It is not recommended to do it if you have high blood pressure, thrombophlebitis or serious vascular diseases – in these cases it is better to consult a doctor.
And do not hold your feet longer than 20 minutes, this time is enough to achieve the effect.
Add in a few deep breaths or some soft music to help you relax, and you'll create a mini-yoga practice that will not only improve blood flow, but also help calm your mind before bed.
The legs up pose is not just a way to relieve swelling. This is a gentle, natural way to restore balance to the body, improve blood and lymph circulation, and give the body a break after a busy day.
Try to introduce this habit into your evening ritual, and after just 10 minutes you will feel how lightness returns, and your sleep becomes stronger and more peaceful.
