Hurricane Melissa devastated the Caribbean. At least 27 people are dead


As Reuters writes, Haitian authorities announced that at least 23 people, including 10 children, died as a result of Hurricane Melissamainly due to flooding in Petit-Goave. 10 people are still missing.

On the other hand Jamaican authorities reported four deaths. “I regret to inform you that the St. Elizabeth Police have confirmed the deaths of four people – three men and one woman – who were found after being washed away by hurricane floodwaters,” Desmond McKenzie, vice-chairman of the Jamaica Disaster Risk Management Board, wrote in a press release.

Hurricane Melissa after passing through Jamaica and Haiti, where the wind was blowing at a speed of almost 300 km per hour, it passed Cuba, but with much less force. It weakened to Category 2 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, but left destruction and heavy rain in its wake in Cuba.

Melissa then moved towards the Bahamas, where it is expected later Wednesday, according to the US National Hurricane Center, before heading towards Bermuda, where it is expected to arrive on Thursday evening.

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said the hurricane had caused “significant damage” but had so far reported no casualties. Many rivers overflowed their banks, many houses are destroyed, and power lines are down.

When it hit Jamaica on Tuesday, Melissa was the strongest hurricane in the area in 90 years. “There has been massive, unprecedented damage to infrastructure, property, roads, communications and energy networks,” said Dennis Zulu, the UN coordinator for Caribbean countries, including Jamaica.
