The second round of Masters 1000 Paris brought a huge surprise: the elimination of world leader Carlos Alcaraz. The Spaniard won the first set of the confrontation with Cameron Norrie (30 years, 31 ATP), but lost, after 2 hours and 25 minutes, with the score 6-4, 3-6, 4-6.

After skipping the inaugural round in Paris, Carlos Alcaraz made his debut at this year's Masters 1000 Paris with a duel against Britain's Cameron Norrie, who had previously beaten Argentina's Sebastian Baez (24, 43 ATP), 6-3, 6-4.

Carlos Alcaraz, defeated in 3 sets by Cameron Norrie: “First win against a world leader”

The world leader won the opening set, 6-4, and looked to be on his way to victory and an expected qualification to the round of 16. Norrie, however, had a solid reply, played exceptionally in the second set and surprised Alcaraz.

After leveling in sets, the 30-year-old continued to control the game and eventually prevailed 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, achieving the surprise of the tournament at Masters 1000 Paris.

“It's a huge win for me. I just came back from an injury. Last year I lost in the first round of qualifying here. The second part of the year I just tried to enjoy the tennis. I was able to do that.

To get a win like this… it's the biggest win of my career, the first against a world leader. Especially since he is probably the most confident player in the world. Him and Sinner. So I'm happy with what I did“, said Norrie, visibly moved.

In the next round, Norrie will meet the winner of the duel between cousins Arthur Rinderknech (30 years, 29 ATP) and Valentin Vacherot (26 years, 40 ATP), who also met in the final in Shanghai.

This is the 3rd time Alcaraz has lost to Norrie. The Briton defeated him in the “quarters” in Cincinnati, in 2022, score 7-6 (4), 6-7 (4), 6-4, and in the final in Rio de Janeiro, in 2023, score 5-7, 6-4, 7-5. Instead, the 22-year-old has won 5 times against the world number 31.
