First grain, now steel: Poland is trying to blame Ukraine for the losses of its metallurgists
Polish trade unions call on the government to demand from the European Commission a one-year embargo on the import of Ukrainian steel, accusing Kyiv of “unfair competition”.
This is despite the fact that the export of our steel to Poland is lower than the pre-war level and does not threaten Polish manufacturers at all, Kyiv Independent reports.
According to Eurostat, in the seven months of 2025, Ukrainian steel exports to Poland increased by 19%, but its share in Polish imports is only 14.7% – against 27% from Germany.
Oleksandr Kalenkov, president of Ukrmetalurgprom, said that Poland is “looking for a convenient culprit in its own problems” caused by high energy prices.
The war-ravaged Ukrainian metallurgy cannot threaten the Polish one. In 2024, steel production in Ukraine amounted to only 7.6 million tons, compared to 22 million in 2021.
“The new restrictions will only create a new crisis, similar to the “grain” one,” the newspaper writes.
