Pakistan's defense minister said Saturday he believes Afghanistan wants peace, but warned that failure to reach an agreement at talks in Istanbul would mean “open war.”

On October 19, Pakistan and Afghanistan agreed to an immediate ceasefire after more than a week of bloody border fighting that killed dozens. Further meetings of delegations from Pakistan and Afghanistan were also announced to ensure the durability of the ceasefire and verify its compliance.

Pakistan blames Afghanistan for sheltering the rebel Islamist group Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). The TTP has been attacking Pakistani security forces since 2007, seeking to overthrow the government and introduce fundamentalist Islamic law in Pakistan. Kabul denies these accusations. Both countries share a border that is over 2,600 kilometers long. km, but Afghanistan never recognized it. (PAP)
