Andron Stargazer

On this day, the memory of three holy martyrs is celebrated – Provos, Tarakh and Andronikos, who suffered for their faith under the Emperor Diocletian.

Saint Andron (Andronikos) in Rus' was considered a wise astrologer. “Andron can reach the sky with his pole, scoop up the stars with a scoop,” people said. On the day of remembrance of the saint, it was customary to watch the starry sky until midnight.

The stars were used to judge both the weather and the future harvest. So, if the sky was starry, peas were supposed to be born the next year. Bright stars foreshadowed frost, dim ones – a thaw, and blinking ones – a change in weather. If they saw a falling star, they expected winds and a dry year.

At this time, threshing continued – grain and flour were made from grain. Therefore, the most popular dish on the peasant table was porridge – barley, oatmeal or millet. Porridge was served with butter or lard, and for children it was seasoned with sweet jam.
