Should Poland guarantee Putin a flight to Hungary? [SONDAŻ]


Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin were to talk in Budapest about a ceasefire in Russia's war with Ukraine. The US president announced it proudly. There was talk of a meeting on Thursday, October 23. Later, however, things started to get complicated and now it is not known whether and when the meeting will take place.
Quickly after Trump's announcement, it turned out that Putin would have a problem getting to the capital of Hungary, because many European countries, including Poland, do not want to see Russian planes in their airspace.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Radosław Sikorski emphasized in an interview on Radio Rodzinki that Poland, as a signatory to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, cannot guarantee that the Polish court will not order the detention of the Russian President's plane in order to transfer it to The Hague. Sikorski added that the Russian side is aware of this, which may prompt it to choose a different flight route.
In a survey conducted for “Wprost” by SW Research on October 21-22, 2025, Poles were asked whether the authorities should allow the Russian president's plane to fly over Polish territory if the summit takes place in Budapest. The results indicate that:
- 51.4 percent respondents are against this possibility,
- 31.3 percent supports this idea,
- and 17.3 percent no opinion.
The greatest opposition was expressed by respondents over 50 years of age (55.7%), women (52.4%), people with higher education (53.2%) and residents of large cities with over 500,000 inhabitants. inhabitants (62.1%).
