Folk calendar

Evlampius Winter Pointer

On this day, two saints are honored – brother and sister Eulampios and Eulampia, who lived during the time of Emperor Maximilian, a persecutor of Christians.

In Rus' on this day they observed various signs by which one could judge the upcoming weather. They looked, for example, at the month: it was believed that its horns should point in the direction from which the winds would soon blow. There was another interpretation of this sign: if the horns of the month point to the north, there will be a quick and severe winter, if to the south, there will be mud and slush all the way to Kazanskaya.

At this time, the logs were split into splinters, which were installed in special lamps – lights. In their light, the peasants were doing household chores: preparing food, doing handicrafts, repairing tools, making something. The splinter burned out quickly – in just a few minutes. Therefore, the children were charged with the duty of monitoring the lights and changing the torches as necessary.
