The killer of musician Igor Talkov, Valery Shlyafman, was sentenced in absentia to 13 years in prison. This decision was made today by the Petrogradsky District Court of St. Petersburg, reports the press service of the courts of St. Petersburg.
The musician and iconic rocker was shot dead in the fall of 1991 – the tragedy occurred in the Yubileiny cultural center right at a gathering of Soviet pop stars. Talkov was killed with a revolver shot in the heart; it all happened right outside the dressing room behind the stage.
For more than 30 years, the case remained unsolved; the investigation was completed only last summer. Law enforcement officers identified the main suspect – Valery Shlyafman, the rocker's former concert director. In the high-profile case, 150 witnesses were interviewed – the stars who performed at Yubileiny that evening also gave their testimony in court.
Investigators found out that the conflict began because of a dispute over who should go on stage first – Shlyafman was aiming at the director of the singer Aziza, but he dodged – and Talkov was mortally wounded. After the tragedy, the killer urgently moved to Israel for permanent residence.
