The commune with debts of 1.5 million euros and 48 employees: the mayor increased his salary by 2,300 lei in just one year

While the Government demands austerity and the reduction of the budget apparatus, a commune in Mureș county, with only 2,400 inhabitants, has huge debts to the state budget – 1.5 million euros and a town hall with almost 50 employees.

Nadeș City Hall, Mureș County, has accumulated debts to ANAF in the amount of 8.57 million lei, the equivalent of approximately 1.5 million euros, according to data published at the end of August. The figure places the institution among the most indebted local administrations in the country.
According to ANAF, the total amount of outstanding fiscal debts of institutions and public authorities in Romania reaches over 582 million lei.
48 positions in the organizational chart for 2,400 inhabitants
Although the commune has a population of only 2,400 people, the latest organizational chart of the Nadeș City Hall (which has not been updated since 2020) shows that the institution operates with 48 positions.
In addition to the mayor, the document includes 10 executive positions and 29 employees with contractual staff status, plus 9 vacancies. It is not clear whether they have been occupied in the meantime.
Employees also benefit from substantial increases: 50% more salary for those working with European funds and 10% extra for financial control activities.
The mayor's salary increased by 2,300 lei in one year
The mayor of Nadeș commune, Sînpetean Alexandru Grigore, increased his net monthly income by 2,300 lei in a single year. According to the declaration of wealth from 2024, the mayor collected 9,300 lei monthly, while in the previous year his salary was 7,000 lei, reports Newsweek.
Austerity only on paper
The situation in Nadeș reflects the wider problems of the local public administration, in a context where the Government is demanding a reduction in expenses and the number of budget posts.
In recent years, the number of state employees has increased, despite the measures announced by the Ciucă Government, then by the Ciolacu Government, regarding the hiring freeze.
The new team at Victoria Palace is now forced to implement real reform, which could lead to redundancies in the public sector.
Bolojan demands the reduction of the budget apparatus
The President of the Bihor County Council, Ilie Bolojan, proposed sending home approximately 13,000 employees from the local administration. At the same time, several local leaders demand that the Executive apply the same measures in the central administration, not only at the local level.
However, the social democrats continue to avoid the option of layoffs, preferring a so-called “budget rag”, by reducing spending funds by 10%, without giving up employees, neither in the local administration, nor at the central level.
