– The federal government will incur exceptional expenses to guarantee the timely payment of October salaries (of these people – PAP) – the ministry's spokeswoman told the agency, adding that these payments will be reimbursed later by the American side.

On Tuesday, the German trade union of service providers Verdi called on the government to ensure the payment of wages to civilian employees of the US armed forces in Germany employed in sectors such as logistics, catering, health care, security and rescue services.

According to Verdi, budget paralysis currently threatens employees of American bases in Rhineland-Palatinate, Bavaria, Hesse and Baden-Württemberg, in the south and southwest of Germany.

In the past, civilian workers, paid under the collective agreement applicable to armed forces stationed in Germany, “were excluded from the effects of the (U.S.) administration shutdown and continued to receive their salaries,” Germany's finance ministry told AFP.

Since October 1, part of the US federal administration has been closed, and hundreds of thousands of officials have been placed on forced unpaid leave.

Budget paralysis in the US is the result of the failure to adopt a provisional budget after the expiry of the budget for the last fiscal year, which ended on September 30. Senators of the Democratic Party are blocking the adoption of the provisional bill voted in the House of Representatives because they demand the restoration of health insurance subsidies, without which the costs of insurance will increase dramatically.
