The statement of former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder that he was not interested in Warsaw's reservations towards Nord Stream is impertinence towards Poland – said Reinhard Veser, a columnist of this newspaper, in “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” on Saturday.

Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder testified on Friday before the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern parliamentary committee investigating the construction of Nord Stream. The social democrat defended the project and reported that under his rule, Germany was to abandon nuclear energy and focus more on natural gas. He emphasized that Russia could deliver it cheaply via pipeline, and he was not interested in Poland's objections to the project.

“It was difficult to expect remorse from Schroeder. His reluctance to make any contribution to the case of the so-called climate foundation in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, which was in fact a cover for Moscow's energy geopolitics, was predictable,” Veser writes in a comment posted on the “FAZ” website.

The columnist is critical of Schroeder's statement that he was not interested in the Polish government's objections to the gas pipeline. According to Veser, this is “impertinence towards a neighboring country (Poland), which – unlike Russia – is an ally of Germany.”

The author of the article states that with this attitude Schroeder “contributed to consolidating the historically conditioned distrust of Poles towards Germany, which also occurs in pro-European circles”, and the fact that “he calls conscious disregard for Polish interests as 'politics of peace' is revealing.”

Gerhard Schroeder was Chancellor of Germany from 1998 to 2005. In the years 2017–2022, he was the head of the board of directors of the Russian oil company Rosneft. (PAP)
