During his lifetime, Francis ordered that he be buried not in the grotto of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, where most popes are buried, but in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome. The bishop especially loved this place: he prayed there before and after all his trips abroad.
