Folk calendar

Denis Pozimny

On this day the memory of Saint Dionysius the Areopagite, who lived in Athens in the 1st century, is celebrated. According to legend, Dionysius was a disciple of the Apostle Paul and the first bishop of his city.

In Rus' they said that on the eve of winter, autumn fevers come to the earth – evil spirits that cause illness. At this time, they wander around the world, tormenting themselves and torturing people. Russian people believed that autumn fever could penetrate a person in many ways – get under clothes, fly into the eye as a speck. Aspen bark, which you were supposed to always carry with you, was considered an excellent remedy for them. In the hut they usually kept an aspen log, just in case: if their legs cramped, they put them on the log; if they had a headache, they lay down on the log with their heads.

Denis (Dionysius) had to be wary of not only fevers, but also the evil eye. “Denis, beware of the evil eye,” people said. Onions, garlic, radishes and salt were used against the evil eye, damage and any other curse. They said that salt and radish eat away all the evil words written on paper, and the smell of garlic and onions frightens evil spirits. It was customary to cast spells against the evil eye against Denis, and they also tried to avoid people “with the evil eye” (this ability was usually attributed to brown-eyed and black-eyed people).
