Berlin and Paris signed an agreement on Wednesday to implement a satellite-based early warning system called Odin's Eye, which aims to significantly improve Europe's ability to detect missile launches, Reuters writes.
“It remains crucial for our common defense to be able to detect and counter threats as quickly as possible,” said German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius at the signing ceremony of the agreement, alongside France's new senior minister, Catherine Vautrin, on the sidelines of a NATO meeting in Brussels.
“From space, we aim to detect hostile missiles at launch. Only then can we intercept them in time,” Pistorius added.
The development of the architecture for the Odin's Eye system was coordinated by the German space technology group OHB, based in Bremen.
