Paramount Global has announced that it will close in Europe, until December 31, 2025, five of its musical channels under the MTV brand, ending a period of more than four decades of continuous broadcast, according to Euronews.com. The measure will also affect Romania, writes the media page.
Five channels will be closed: MTV Music, MTV 80S, MTV 90S, MTV and MTV Live Club. They will be closed first in the UK and Ireland, then in France, Germany, Austria, Poland, Hungary, Australia and Brazil.
But the measure will affect Romania, according to the media page of the cables being already informed about the transmission cessation.
The channels licensed in the United Kingdom were the ones who also issued in our country, writes the quoted source. The main channel, MTV HD, which currently broadcasts predominantly formed by reality and entertainment, will remain available in the UK, but it is not clear if it will remain in Romania.
The decision to close the MTV channels belongs to the giant Media Paramount Global and is part of a large process of restructuring and reducing costs, but also of a major change in how the public consumes music. More and more spectators choose platforms such as YouTube and Tiktok to watch musical videos, according to Euronews.com.
MTV closure marks the end of an era. Cultural heritage started in the United States in 1981, when MTV first broadcast the video “Video Killed the Radio Star” by The Buggles, ends here. From there, iconic moments of pop culture followed. MTV began to be broadcast in Europe in 1987, and shows like MTV Unplugged have marked a whole generation.
Paramount Global will make until the end of this year and other notable changes in Central and Eastern European markets, where channels such as Teennick, Nickmusic, Central Extra and Paramount Network are expected to close.
