The Minister of Finance, Alexandru Nazare, states, on Sunday, after the Ecofin meeting, of the EU finance ministers, that Romania has exceeded the danger of suspending European funds for next year, as the measures taken by the Government “make their effects”. Romania would not have allowed it to lose the money from the European Union, the minister appreciates, adding that European funds are our main source of growth and economic relaunch, informs News.ro.

Nazare sent, on Sunday afternoon, on Facebook, “important messages after EcoFin, related to Romania's access to European funds”.

“At the July EcoFin I was very close to having the possibility of having the European funds suspended for 2026, which Romania would not have allowed. Today we are no longer in this reality. The measures we have taken in this 100 days make their effects. It will help us to relaunch the economic growth, which is weak at this time, ”the Minister of Finance said.

He also mentioned meetings with counterparts in Bulgaria and Greece he had at Ecofin.

“In relation to Bulgaria we discussed the issue of smuggling cigarettes, a very serious matter that we have to hold in the brake (…) The same thing I did with the Minister of Finance of Greece, because Greece is very worried about this issue and all three countries we can change information and take measures for the contrab.”

The Minister of Finance, Alexandru Nazare, participated in the meeting of the Council for Economic and Financial Affairs (ECOFIN), organized in Luxembourg on October 9-10, 2025.

In a press conference held on October 1, after the Government adopted the budget rectification, the Nazare Minister was asked if Romania risks suspending European funds due to excessive deficit, now reached 8.4% of GDP, Alexandru Nazare estimated that Brussels will take into account the efforts made by the Government in Bucharest and will not resort to the 10th of October, of finance from the EU countries.

“I do not think it can be in the current context after the adoption of package 1 and everything I have already provided in package 2 and the measures taken I do not think it can be an activation of the respective clause regarding the European funds, but it remains in question because there is already the letter sent to the European Parliament. The measures taken, it is not appropriate to activate the clause ”, commented Alexandru Nazare.
