The Russian Black Sea fleet denied that the Diesel-Electorcă Novorossiysk submarine was forced to come to the emergency area off the coasts of France due to a failure, the Interfax News Agency, quoted by Reuters, reported Monday.

The submarine performs a scheduled transit after fulfilling its missions in the Mediterranean, said the press service of the Black Sea fleet, according to Interfax.

The NATO Maritime Command said on Thursday, October 9, on its X account that a Russian submarine operated off the ribs of Brittany.

A frigate from the French navy followed the Russian submarine that came to the surface off the ribs of Brittany, according to the UK Defense Journal, which cites the statement of the NATO Maritime Command.

In a post distributed on social networks, NATO said: “We are. We are with you. A frigate of the French Navy supervises the maritime closeings of the Alliance, marking the presence of a Russian submarine operating on the surface of the brake. NATO is prepared to defend our alliance with constant vigilance.”

The monitoring operation is part of the ordinary NATO maneuvers in the North Atlantic, where the Allied forces maintain the supervision of surface and underwater activities near European waters.

The submarine, nicknamed “black hole”

According to the UK Defense Journal, this is the Novorossiysk submarine (B-261), a diesel-electric attack submarine in the Hall II class, project 636.3, belonging to the Russian Fleet in the Black Sea.

The submersible was built at the Admiralty Naval Siters in St. Petersburg, launched in 2013 and put into operation a year later. It has been called “black hole” because it is close to undecided when it is swinging, according to RIA Novosti.

They have a displacement of 2,350 tons on the surface and 3,950 underwater, with a speed of 17/20 knots. The submarine has an autonomy of 45 hours.

It can be equipped with 4 kalibr missiles, 18 533 mm torpedoes and 24 me and can sink up to 300 meters deep.

According to Russian telegram channels, the submarine was forced to come to the surface due to serious technical failure in the fuel system. UK Defense Journal said the extent of the damages has not been confirmed.

The submarine has previously operated in the Mediterranean in support of Russian military actions in Syria and has carried out several rotations in the region as part of the Mediterranean operative force of Moscow.
