27.4 billion crowns for Arctic defense. New F-35 fighters are planned


Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen emphasized that the purchase of new planes, worth CZK 29 billion, is a continuation of Denmark's previous commitment to purchase 27 American fighter jets. As he noted, this decision is necessary in the face of the difficult geopolitical situation in which Europe is once again struggling with an armed conflict.
“These are necessary investments in difficult times when, unfortunately, war broke out again on European soil,” Poulsen said during a meeting with journalists.
Greenland in the spotlight of the USA
Greenland, which is a sovereign territory of Denmark, since has long been in the center of interest in the United States. US President Donald Trump expressed his desire to take control of the island, arguing that it is of strategic importance to American defense, including the ballistic missile early warning system. Greenland lies on the shortest route between Europe and North America, making it a key strategic point.

Although both Denmark and Greenland rejected the possibility of transferring the island to US control, Copenhagen admitted that it had neglected the territory's military potential for years.
Investments in military infrastructure
The announced funds are to be allocated to the construction of two new Arctic ships, which will join the three previously planned units. Additionally, Denmark will invest in a maritime patrol aircraft, an icebreaker, modern radar systems and drones. Poulsen also announced that a new headquarters for the Danish armed forces will be established in the Greenlandic capital, Nuuk.

Currently, Denmark has limited military assets in Greenland, including aging inspection ships and patrol units that use dog sleds. This traditional form of patrolling, dating back to World War II, is still used by specialized units of the Royal Danish Navy.
