“They treated us brutally.” Poles detained in Israel already in Warsaw


Faris, Ptak and Sterczewski were part of a group of over 470 people from 47 countries who participated in Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) — an international humanitarian convoy to deliver aid to Gaza. Last week, on the night from Wednesday to Thursday, the flotilla was intercepted by the Israeli Navy in international waters. 42 ships were detained and their crews were brought to Israel, where the participants were detained and then deported.

Polish participants — Faris, Ptak and Sterczewski — were deported to Athens on Monday, from where they returned to Warsaw. Journalist Ewa Jasiewicz, a British citizen, left Israel earlier.
— We must all stand together against this genocidal war – Omar Faris, head of the Polish delegation, told journalists, referring to the Israeli military operation in the Gaza Strip.

During a meeting with the media at the airport, Omar Faris described the way they were treated by the Israeli services. — They treated us absolutely brutally. For several hours, I am 73 years old, they tied my hands behind my back and placed me on stones – he reported.
He added that during interrogations in Israeli custody, participants were asked, among others: about his possible contacts with Hamas. — Our problem is the occupation, which began 42 years before the rise of Hamas Faris said.
He also emphasized that the participants of the flotilla support a peaceful solution to the conflict. — We want a solution like in South Africa — a democratic state for all, he noted.
