Yesterday, within Of the Bucharest car salonI, byd (“Build Your Dreams”), a company from Shenzhen, China, founded in 1995 and present on the Romanian market this year, the European leader in sales of electric vehicles, has launched two new models: the BYD SEAL 5 DM-I and BYD SEAL 6 DM-I.
-
DM-I (Dual Mode-Intelligent) is the Plug-In hybrid system developed by Byd, which combines a gasoline engine with an electric one.
-
Unlike the classic hybrids, the electric motor is main, and the gasoline one works especially as a generator or acceleration support. The car can go completely electric over short distances and automatically switch between low consumption modes.
The two complement the brand portfolio, along with the Seal U and Sealion 7 SUVs, the Seal Sedan and the more accessible ATTO 2 and Dolphin Surf.
Official present in Romania from May 2025, the company quickly built a network of 15 sales centers, in partnership with several local dealers. The extension continues, and the brand is present this fall at the Bucharest Auto Show 2025, with the entire range of electric models and plug-in hybrid.
The launch of the two models was accompanied by the agreements of the Symphony Orchestra in Bucharest, which offered a unique show: famous pieces of Metallica, Nirvana, Guns n 'Roses or Phoenix formations, reinterpreted in a symphonic manner, were interwoven from large classic works, ringing at the BYD stand.

The Byd Seal 6 DM-I is a middle-class sedan, positioned as an alternative to devoted models such as Skoda Octavia or Volkswagen Passat. The car uses the Plug-in Super Hybrid DM-I hybrid system, which combines a 1.5-liter thermal engine with an electric and an LFP Blade battery, internally developed by the byd.
The battery has different capacities depending on the version: 10.08 kWh for Boost and 19 KWh for Comfort Lite and Comfort. With the highest battery, pure electric autonomy reaches 105 kilometers, and combined autonomy (with full tank) exceeds 1,450 km.
8.5 secondsIt is the time when Seal 6 reaches 100 km/h, the car being limited to 180km/h.
The medium consumption declared, in a mixed mode, can reach a liter and a half / 100 kilometers for the top versions. The loading time is about 2 hours and 40 minutes at a 6.6 kW outlet, And at a fast charger 26 kW, the battery charges from 30% to 80% in about 23 minutes.

The trunk space is higher, the interior is identical, the maximum speed and the acceleration 0-100 km/h remain constant. Consumption increases and decreases autonomy. In addition it brings an electric tailgate and aluminum ceiling bars. The model concerns the same audience as Skoda Octavia Combi or VW Passat Variant.

It is a middle-class plug-in hybrid sedan, also available in the Touring version, which brings to Europe Super DM-I technology in a more compact format than its brother, Seal 6 DM-I. The model combines a 1.5 -liter gasoline engine with an electric system and an LFP Blade batteryoffering a total autonomy of up to 1,050 km and about 100 km in pure electric mode. The declared average consumption is 1.7 l/100 km. The trunk has 508 liters in the sedan version, and the Touring variant offers an extended volume.

Andrei Pană, Product Manager Byd: “Plug-in is a transition between conventional and electric”
– Mr. Pană, two new models complete the BYD range, presented at the Bucharest Auto Show. What can you tell us about them?
– Indeed, we launch two models. They are Plug-in Hybrid sedan, with byd-I technology, a technology developed by Byd. Basically, they are electric plug-in models: they also have a battery, and a thermal engine. Autonomies are over 1,000 kilometers for both. We have the SEAL 5 model, which is a compact sedan. It comes in two levels of equipment, customers can choose between four exterior colors and two interior variants. It has a 1.5 -liter engine and an electric motor.
– How attractive do you think they will be on the Romanian market?
– We are expecting pretty good sales. Plug-in models are a start for customers who are not determined to move directly to an electric motor, but still want the silence of an electric model. Our models DM assures exactly this. With Seal 5 you can go up to 100 kilometers in full electric mode, then in hybrid mode. Basically the thermal engine is not just working for propulsion, he acts as a generatorcharging the battery that, further, transmits the energy to the wheels.
– Do you think the plug-in hybrid version can remove little of the existing reluctance of Romanians to purchase electric cars?
– Yes, I think that. There are customers who are not very familiar with the electric side, and after leading a plug-in model, most of the time, the next model they buy is full electric. Basically, the plug-in is a transition between the conventional and the fully electric model.
