The meeting was dedicated to the resolution “Women, Peace and Security” adopted in October 2000.
The UN called the resolution “a landmark document that reaffirms the role of women in conflict prevention and resolution, and calls for their equal participation in all efforts to maintain peace and security.”
Guterres called for women's participation in peace negotiations and stressed that “the role of women in building peace is irreplaceable.”
“The world does not need more reminders of this truth – it needs real results that will reflect it,” said the UN Secretary General.
In his opinion, “it is impossible to build peace without the participation of women, but real changes in the lives of women and girls caught in conflict are still a long way off.”
Guterres noted that over the past 25 years the number of women in UN peacekeeping missions has doubled. However, he noted that women-led organizations are being deprived of resources, although they are the ones who “provide critical support to millions of people.”
