I interpret the words of former German Chancellor Angela Merkel so that it is as true as the fact that no one protested against Nord Stream – said the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs Radosław Sikorski, referring to Merkel's alleged statement blaming Poland for the war in Ukraine.

This is about Merkel's interview for the Hungarian online channel Partizan, which the German daily “Bild” described as “Explosive interview: Merkel blames Poland for Putin's war.” These words did not appear in the interview – this is an interpretation of her statement that in 2021, Warsaw and the Baltic countries were against her idea of a “new format” of talks between the EU and Russia.

Sikorski, asked on Monday at a press conference about the interpretation of these words, replied that he interpreted them as “the same truth as what (Merkel) said in her memoirs, that no one from Central Europe protested against Nord Stream.”

– Please see what the German government's reaction was to what I said in 2007 about how we don't like agreements over our heads, so apparently the Chancellor forgot about how her own government reacted to our protests – added the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Bild, in its discussion of the interview, also wrote that the former chancellor in the conversation “blamed Poland and the Baltic states for the severance of diplomatic relations between Russia and the EU, and thus indirectly for the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, which began a few months later.” In fact, no such words were said in the interview.

In a conversation with a Hungarian journalist available on YouTube, the former leader of the German Christian Democrats said that in June 2021 she had the impression that Putin “no longer takes the Minsk Agreement (which was supposed to settle the conflict in Donbas – PAP) seriously.” She added that for this reason, she and French President Emmanuel Macron “wanted a new format” to “talk directly as the EU to Putin.”

However, a spokeswoman for the former chancellor's office told PAP that Merkel's statements in the original German version speak for themselves and are nothing new. (PAP)
