The White House defended President Donald Trump on Wednesday on Wednesday, after Pope Leon XIV, born in the US, criticized the “inhuman” treatment applied to the migrants of the current US administration, AFP and Polito writes.
“Someone who says” I am against abortion, but agree with inhuman treatment on immigrants who are in the United States, “I do not know if it is pro-life,” Pope Leon said in front of reporters.
The first American chief of the Catholic Church insisted that someone against abortion, but who at the same time supports the death penalty-further legal punishment in many American states-is not “really pro-life”.
Leon, born in Chicago, who became a pope in May after Francis's death, made these statements to journalists at his summer residence Castel Gandolfo.
The spokeswoman for the White House, Karoline Leavitt, who is a fervent Catholic, rejected the criticisms of the Pontiff on Wednesday, when he was asked to respond to them at his press conference at the White House, but without explicitly mentioned Pope.
“I reject the idea that illegal immigrants are treated in the United States under this administration,” Leavitt told reporters.
She claimed that there was “a significant inhuman treatment applied to illegal immigrants” during the administration of former President Joe Biden, when a record number of people crossed the US border with Mexico.
“This administration tries to apply the laws of our nation in the most human possible and we respect the law,” added Leavitt. “We do this on behalf of the citizens of our country living here,” said the representative of the White House.
A few months before being elected Pope, former cardinal Robert Francis Prevost distributed articles on which he criticized Trump and JD Vice Vance, especially on Migration.
This is not the first time that the White House-which displayed its religious fervor, especially Christian and Catholic belief, through its policies-does not agree with the Vatican. Earlier this year, JD Vance Vice President, another convinced Catholic, had a public dispute with Pope Francis on the hard policies of the American immigration administration.
A spokesman for Vance refused to comment on Pope Leon's statements.
President Donald Trump, who was in the second term, tried to fulfill his promise in the election campaign to take drastic measures at the border, sending federal immigration agents (ICE police) to perform massive and publicized raids throughout the country. The White House has published a video recording with prisoners in chains, and on Valentine's Day posted the message: “The roses are red, the violets are blue, come here illegally and we will deport you.”
He also present at the press conference held on Wednesday by Leavitt, Vance rejected the democrats' request regarding the resumption of subsidies for the expiration -condition to be able to exceed the “budget paralysis” -, the US Vice -President claiming that the immigrants are responsible for the long -standing time.
“Very often, someone waiting for the emergency room is an illegal stranger, very often is a person who does not speak English,” he said. “Why do these people benefit from medical care in hospitals paid by American citizens?” Added Vance.
