Ukraine and Syria have agreed to restore diplomatic relations

“We are glad to support this important step and are ready to support the Syrian people on the way to stability,” the president wrote.

From the Ukrainian side, the document was signed by the Foreign Minister Andrei Sibiga.

Zelensky noted that in New York he met with Syria President Ahmed al-Sharaa.

“During the negotiations, promising industries were also discussed in detail for the development of cooperation, security threats to both countries and the importance of counteraction to them. They agreed to build relations on the basis of mutual respect and trust,” the President of Ukraine emphasized.

Zelensky and al-Sharaa during the meeting discussed in detail projects in the field of agriculture, specified in OP.

“The heads of state agreed to build relations between Ukraine and Syria on the basis of mutual respect, trust and dignity,” the report said.

Context

Relations between Syria and Ukraine deteriorated because of the official support of Syria (the time of the President of Bashar al-Assad) of Russia during a full-scale war.

In 2022, Syria also recognized the “independence” of the so -called “DPR” and “LPR”, which entailed a breakdown of diplomatic ties with Ukraine. Then Syria’s decision was commented on by Zelensky. “Russia nevertheless squeezed out from Syria the alleged recognition of the occupation structures in the Donbass as supposedly states. This is a worthless history. And in this case, there will be no more relation to Ukraine with Syria, and there will be even more sanctions pressure against Syria,” he emphasized.

In the fall of 2024, after the fall of the regime, Sibiga announced his readiness to “pave the way to renew the relationship” with Syria. The media wrote that Ukraine allegedly assisted the Islamist group “Hayat Tahrir al-Sham”, who headed the opposition’s offensive in Syria. Zelensky denied assistance to the rebels in overthrowing the Assad regime.

Kyiv has already made contact with the new authorities of Syria, on December 27, the speaker of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Georgy Tikhiy announced this.

On December 30, Damascus was an official visit by Sibiga, who headed the Ukrainian delegation and personally met with the leader of the formations that adopted power in Syria, al-Sharaa. The Foreign Minister of Ukraine also raised the flag of Ukraine over the consulate in Damascus.

In January 2025, Zelensky announced the renewal of the diplomatic relations of Ukraine with Syria.
