New Start is a Russian-American treaty signed in 2010 on reducing strategic offensive arms, which limits the number of heads placed to 1550 in each country. The limit of placed rockets and bombers was set at 700 on each side. The agreement expires on February 5, 2026.

– Russia is ready to continue to follow the central quantitative limits resulting from the New Start treaty for a year after its expiry – said Vladimir Putin on Monday during the meeting of the Russian Security Council.

The President of Russia emphasized that he is ready to extend the New Start by a year “in the interest of global non -spraying” and help revive the dialogue with Washington, if US President Donald Trump is ready to do the same.
