On Thursday, September 11, Peter Mandelson was officially revoked as the UK ambassador to the United States, just six months after appointment, following publishing over 100 compromising emails between him and the controversial Jeffrey Epstein.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer's decision comes a few days before the official visit of US President Donald Trump to the United Kingdom, a moment considered strategic for Anglo-American relations.

In documents recently published in several publications across the ocean, Peter Mandelson opened his support for Jeffrey Epstein, the well -known businessman convicted of sexual exploitation on minors. The disclosures were considered incompatible with the diplomatic status of the ambassador and caused a wave of indignation in both the UK and in the US.

A controversial appointment from the beginning

The appointment of Peter Mandelson as an ambassador of Britain in Washington in December 2024, was greeted with skepticism from the beginning.

Political veteran with influence in laburistic backstage from the Tony Blair era, Peter Mandelson was considered an unorthodox choice for a traditionally reserved position for career diplomats, so Prime Minister Keir Starmer has never been completely convinced of this option, according to sources close to him, quoted by Politico.

However, the appointment was strongly supported by Morgan Mcsweeney, Starmer's office and old protected by Peter Mandelson.

Although the lack of a remarkable candidate in the diplomatic corps seemed to justify the decision, the polarizing character of Mandelson and his past loaded with controversy were a constant vulnerability.

In a Washington dominated by the wave of Maga, Peter Mandelson's task was an ungrateful one: to maintain and develop transatlantic relations between a center-left labourist government and a radicalized Republican Establishment.

Despite obvious political disabled, Mandelson being a well -known Eurofil, supporter of globalism and perceived as close to China, he temporarily managed to win the sympathy of the Trump administration.

He participated in key events, was received in the Oval Office and even managed to conclude a significant commercial agreement in May. According to the same source, although he was privately called “a cunning guy”, Donald Trump in public, making jokes about his “distinguished” emphasis and calling him “nice”.

Epstein, the skeleton in the closet

It all started to break down for the British ambassador to Washington with the appearance of several photos and personal notes confirming an extremely close relationship between Mandelson and Epstein.

The documents were initially published by the Supervisory Commission of the Chamber of Representatives in the US, and the press immediately took over the information

In one of the pictures, the two appear smiling, dressed in robes, in the billionaire residence, and in a birthday congratulations Peter Mandelson calls Epstein “best friend”. Moreover, a series of over 100 emails showed that Mandelson actively supported Epstein even after his 2008 sentence, saying that the situation had been treated differently in the UK.

Initially, Prime Minister Keir StarMer tried to defend Peter Mandelson, during the weekly session of questions in the Parliament declaring that he “still trusts” him, but against the background of intensifying the pressure from the party, the press and the international partners, he withdrew.

The last blow to the nicknamed “Prince of Darkness” of British politics came from Bloomberg, who published a detailed investigation that revealed the constant and unconditional support of Peter Mandelson for Jeffrey Epstein, including suggestions that his US trial was incorrect.

A few hours after the article appeared, Prime Minister Keir Starmer asked for Foreign Minister Yvette Cooper to dismiss Peter Mandelson as an ambassador.

He was asked to resign but refused

Government sources say that Peter Mandelson has constantly refused to resign, even in front of overwhelming evidence, so that Thursday morning, he was officially revoked.

“The information in recent emails shows that the relationship between Lord Mandelson and Jeffrey Epstein was much deeper than it was known at the time of its appointment,” the statement issued by the British Foreign Ministry said.

Possible candidates

Mandelson's rapid replacement is essential, as Donald Trump's official visit is scheduled to start next week, and the US president would have already expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that he has not been approved earlier about the intention to dismiss the ambassador.

The British government hopes to avoid a major diplomatic crisis and to maintain the direction of negotiations on Ukraine, commercial relations and technological cooperation.

James Roscoe will take over the position of ambassador interim, but several names are already being used to take over the long -term function: Valerie Amos, Richard Moore (current head of MI6) and Mark Sedwill are among the favorites. Also, there is talk of returning to tradition and appointing a career diplomat, to guarantee neutrality and professionalism.

A predictable end for a controversial character

Peter Mandelson's career was marked by spectacular ascents and steep falls. He resigned twice from Blair governments, was politically rehabilitated, but always surrounded by controversy.

First, Peter Mandelson resigned from the position of secretary for trade and industry because of an undeclared loan that he took from a colleague to buy a house in London. He was later invited to return to the position of secretary for Northern Ireland, which he did, but resigned again after he found out that he intervened on behalf of a businessman of Indian origin who wanted to obtain British citizenship.

This time, his dismissal from the Britain's ambassador's position in Washington and the scandal related to the SastRated friendship with Jeffrey Epstein could mean the end of his political career.
