The year 2024 was a record year for elections, the Romanian citizens being called four times to vote. For election campaigns, the parties needed money, and some of the sponsors came from the football world.
MEP elections, local elections, parliamentary elections and presidential elections (only 1) were the four extremely important moments for the political parties in Romania. And for the election campaigns, the parties needed financial support, which came from donors and contributions.
And expertForum.ro centralized all the data, in a report entitled “The great funders of the political parties in 2024”. On the list of those who gave money to the PSD, PNL, USR, gold, the most important parties in Romania, there are names with strong connections in Romanian football.
Gigi Becali, Varga and Nețoiu gave money to PSD
In addition to Gigi Becali, a former gold and candidate for the parliamentary elections, Ioan Ovidiu Andrieș, shareholder in Dinamo, Ioan Varga, the owner of CFR Cluj are also on the list of donors. But also Gigi Nețoiu, former shareholder in Dinamo, and an associate of Mihai Rotaru, financier of Craiova University.
FCSB, the club owned by Gigi Becali (in documents by Theodora Mincu Becali), borrowed PSD with the amount of 1.5 million lei. Also to the Social Democratic Party, MTM Sky Residence (the company owned by Theodora Becali and her husband, Theodor Mincu). Amount? 1 million lei.
To the PSD he directed money and Gigi Nețoiu. Through the company “Morning La Cetate”, which deals with the production of electricity, the former shareholder from Craiova University and Dinamo sent 1 million lei.
The PSD received 600,000 lei from Ştefănescu Elena Alina, who appears as an administrator at Mihai Rotaru's company, Delta Energy Solutions, and as an associate representative within the Craiova University team.
FCSB also gave money to gold. Specifically, 500,000 lei.
“We have identified few cases in which a financier transferred money to two or more parties. In just a few cases we identified people or companies affiliated with a party that donated to another. Such a case is FCSB SA, controlled by George Becali, who also directed to gold and PSD,” the authors concluded.
And Ioan Varga, the financier of CFR Cluj, is on the list of donors. It is included with the amount of 500,000 lei to the PSD.
Dinamo's shareholder helped the USR
On the list of USR is one of Dinamo's shareholders. This is Ioan Ovidiu Andrieș (50 years). It took over 5% of Red & White in April 2025. And in 2024 it sent to the USR the amount of 659,000 lei. He also borrowed the party in 2020, with 239,000 lei.
