The second quarter of 2025 brought Polish banking further records – all the largest institutions increased assets. ING Bank Śląski, Citi Handlowy, became the nominal growth leader, but PKO BP still remains at the top.

PKO Bank Polski remains the largest bank in Poland. Its assets – that is, all resources, from the loans granted to investments and cash – exceeded PLN 547 billion. During the year, the bank increased its balance sheet by about PLN 40 billion. Just behind PKO is Bank Pekao – its assets are almost PLN 340 billion, which is 23.5 billion more than a year ago.

The third place belongs to Santander, part of the international financial group. In Poland, this bank already has over PLN 314 billion of zlotys, which means an increase of over PLN 31 billion per year. ING Bank Śląski is fourth – its assets increased to PLN 282 billion, which means an increase by as much as PLN 32.7 billion compared to mid -2024 – the largest increase in the entire sector.

Slightly smaller, although still very large, are mBank and BNP Paribas. mBank increased assets to PLN 256 billion, recording a solid increase by PLN 25.9 billion. BNP Paribas, in turn, reached PLN 168.6 billion, increasing the balance by 9.1 billion. Bank Millennium, Alior and Citi Handlowy also recorded solid increases. Millennium increased assets by over PLN 10 billion, Alior by 9.4 billion, and Citi Handlowy by as much as 11.2 billion, which gives him the highest growth dynamics among large banks. The smallest of tens, BOŚ Bank, also increased assets, although more modestly – from 22.7 to 23.5 billion zlotys.

All the largest banks in Poland increased their assets during the year. This shows that the sector is stable, well managed and resistant to economic turmoil. The increase in assets comes from both growing savings of Poles and and from a larger scale of loans, which banks grant to households and companies.
However, the banking sector changes not only in terms of numbers. You can see three main trends. The first is consolidation – several largest banks already control over 70 percent of the entire market assets, which makes them even more important to the economy. The second trend is digitization – we do more and more matters online and applications, and traditional troops are gradually losing importance. The third trend is green financing – banks are increasingly allocating funds for projects related to renewable energy sources and environmental protection.
