Video Nicușor Dan took his daughter to school and explained why he did not participate in the opening of the school year: “I did not want to defy”. The president also said why the cuts started with education

Nicușor Dan said on Monday, on the first day of the school year, that he had no reaction until now on the topic of education because “there was a discussion between the Government and the unions, the representatives of the teachers”.

Nicușor Dan was Monday morning, along with his three-year-old wife and son, to take his daughter to the secondary school where she is learning.

Asked by the journalists present there why he chose not to participate in the opening of the school year as president, he replied that the reason is “that there is this tension”.

“There are some teachers' claims and I did not want to challenge. I have a discussion in society and I did not want to challenge,” said Nicușor Dan.

The head of state was also asked why the Government Ilie Bolojan operated cuts first in the field of education,

“The question was asked why it started with education. The answer is that what had to do had to be ready until September eight and that was beginning with education,” Nicușor Dan replied.

“Let's see how the situation is placed now and, if there are things that can be remedied, they will be remedied. It was an effort in several directions to reduce the deficit, but it was the effort on education and he had to start earlier to be ready,” the president insisted.

Nicușor Dan also had a message for the teachers who protest. “We will meet at 13.30 and discuss, until another, the children have to get to school.” He said that the discussion with the teachers' representatives will take place in Cotroceni. This is not yet passed into the agenda of the Presidential Administration.

Today, September 8, 2025, for the first time in the last 35 years, the first day of school is carried out without festivities: the educational unions are boycotting the ceremonies and calls the teachers at the rally in Victoriei Square, followed by the march to Cotroceni. Moreover, trade union leaders say that “in many educational units the classrooms will be empty.” The protests are determined by the new changes that enter into force with the beginning of the new school year, such as cutting some types of scholarships, combining schools or increasing the didactic norm.
