At the same time, the Chinese army called the presence of both units in waters separating Taiwan from continental China “provocation”. It was emphasized that the Canadian frigate “Ville de Quebec” and the Australian missile destroyer “Brisbane” “increased the threat to safety” in the region.
The Reuters agency, which provided this information, emphasized that neither Canadian nor Australian armed forces reacted to the communication of the China Army. The Taiwan Ministry of Defense announced, however, that it carefully follows what is happening in the Strait and “sends appropriate air and sea forces to ensure the safety and stability of the” water trail.
Both the United States and their allies, including Taiwan, consider the Taiwan Strait to be an international water route. According to Beijing, which perceives the island as its territory, the strait is a strategic water route and as such is part of Chinese territorial waters. The authorities in Taipei strongly reject China's claims.
