Shocking case in Japan: an elderly woman who died in the house, “devoured to the bones” by her eight cats

An 85 -year -old Japan was found lifeless in his Tokyo apartment. The lawmakers found in the apartment a macabre frame: the eight cats who cared for them consumed their body because they did not have access to food. Le Monde writes about the shocking case and explores the phenomenon of pets that reach the situation to devour the owners' bodies.

The Japanese authorities entered the house after numerous complaints about the persistent odor, the infestation with cat droppings and general disorder signaled by the neighbors. All windows and doors were locked inside – sign that no one had penetrated or left the apartment since the victim's death, writes Le Monde.fr

Case documented in forensic journals

Researchers at the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry in Tokyo (Mariko Kazuta, Kana Unuma and colleagues) have published a work in Journal of Forensic Sciences On August 27, 2025, detailing this exceptional situation: the cats not only consumed the soft tissues, but they also red bones – rare phenomenon in domestic felines.

Cats have bones like verterers, the epiphyses of long bones (Humerus, femur, etc.), cheek, atlas and axis – some bone structures being completely destroyed. The apple, the cheeks, parts of the clavicle and the scapula on the right were red. On the bone fragments were observed traces of bite, compatible with the canines of cats. The lack of other sources of food, say Japanese researchers, have led to the felines to extreme behavior.

The calculation of experts indicates a death spent a few months before – maybe even six months after the last signs observed by the neighbors.

A rarely scientifically documented phenomenon

In 2024 experts at the University of Bern reported in Forensic Science magazine, Medicine and Pathology, seven cases of necrophagy inside the homes by cats and dogs, two of which are particularly interesting.

The first case: a 60 -year -old woman was found dead on the bed in her studio. She wore a sweater with long sleeves, but she has no other clothes. The body is in the early stage of decomposition, and the soft tissue has disappeared from the bottom of the face and from the front of the neck, along with the organs located in this area. Part of the lower jaw bone was partially exposed. The lawmakers observed lesions of the skin in the genital area, especially on the inside of the thighs and on Mons Pubis. A small dog is also in the apartment and had access to the corpse.

The second case involves a 58 -year -old woman found dead in her locked apartment. Her body was lying on the floor, dressed in a shirt, a sweater, panties and pants. The pants slipped to his ankles, and the underwear fell to the middle of his thighs. The examination of the corpse reveals the beginning of the active decomposition process. Based on the condition of the corpse and the last notion of its journal, forensic doctors estimate that the postmortem interval is several days or even weeks, with a maximum probable duration of one month.

A study conducted in 2020 by a forensic doctor at the University of Adelaide, Australia illustrates how massive the loss of soft tissues, bones and organs when many animals participate in necrophagy simultaneously.

The case refers to a 69 -year -old man found lying on the floor of a garbage house, where about thirty cats lived. The body had considerable lesions, caused by post-mortem prey on its body. The chest cavity was empty: there was nothing left of the heart or lungs.

The neck had similar lesions: esophagus, trachea, bronchi, larynx and thyroid were missing. The abdomen had exhibited viscera. The liver had been almost completely devoured. The right kidney, stomach, transverse colon and cecum were also damaged.

The face was completely exposed, the soft tissues of the forehead, the anterior scalp and the face disappear, and the right ear and both eyes were lost.

Macabre conclusion after the Tokyo case

The case in Tokyo is the first documented in which domestic cats, left without food and in an isolated environment, attacked a human skeleton.

The research highlights the potential behavior born of acute hunger and social isolation, offering new perspectives in forensic medicine and anthropology.

Le Monde, who review some cases in which the pets reached the puck in which they were forced to feed on the body of the deceased owners, writes about the terrible incident as a silent warning of the consequences of isolation and negligence – of both humans and pets.
