The critical point in the operation of Golfsztrom, a key ocean currents in the Atlantic, can come much faster than previously thought – according to the research of Dutch scientists from the University of Utrecht. In their opinion, the process of irreversible weakening of current may start around 2060.

Earlier it was forecasted that this could only occur after 2100.

Researchers emphasize that the so -called AMOC (Atlantic Meridional Over -Turning Circulation, Atlantic meridian replaceable circulation) It works like a “thermal conveyor” regulating the climate of the earth. Golfsztrom is an important element of this system. Its collapse could mean cooler and more stormy winters for North-West Europe and a decrease in crops by a third, and for the southern hemisphere-further temperature increase.

Our models show that with moderate CO2 emissions, AMOC collapse may start around 2063, and with high emissions even in 2055 – said Rene Van Westen tests.

Scientists point out that the risk can be reduced by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. “This is not a foregone conclusion; if we stop global warming, we avoid the darkest script,” emphasized prof. Caroline Katsman from the University of Technology in Delft (TU Delft).
