The Australian government announced on Tuesday to expel Iran's ambassador to Canberra after accusing Tehran of involvement in anti -Semitic attacks in Melbourne and Sydney, France Presse reports.
The country's intelligence services reached a “deep disturbing conclusion” that Iran would have orchestrated at least two anti -Semitic attacks at the end of 2024, said Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, at a press conference.
Australia has given the ambassador and three other Iranian diplomats seven days to leave the country, said Foreign Minister Penny Wong.
This decision is a premiere in Australia since World War II until now.
Canberra also suspended the activities of her embassy at Tehran and recalled her ambassador. However, Australia does not intend to completely interrupt diplomatic relations with Iran to defend the interests of its citizens, Wong said.
Albanese said that Iran is behind the fire at a Kosher cafe in a Sydney suburb, in October 2024, and from the Synagogue Adass Israel in Melbourne, in December 2024, based on the conclusions of intelligence services.
No victims were reported following these two fires.
The Australian prime minister said that Iran is probably responsible for other anti-Semitic attacks in the country.
Australia will adopt a law to include Iranian revolutionary guards on the list of terrorist organizations, Albanese said.
