Ukraine could get guarantees much more dangerous for Russia than Article 5 NATO. Even Viktor Orban would not block them [OPINIA]
– The Russians only said that they are against the presence of NATO's contingent in Ukraine in the event of the end of military activities. They did not comment on the guarantee of security for her or said that they could have their own vision. They did not comment on other arrangements that can be made during a meeting in Washington – says Witalij Portnikov.
He notes that you can create security guarantees that will be much more dangerous for Russia than those resulting from Article 5 of the NATO Treaty.
– Maybe they will (guarantees proposed by Trump) more dangerous for Russia. Imagine guarantees in accordance with Article 5 NATO – Russia attacks Ukraine, members of the North Atlantic Alliance gather, and Hungary block all actions in accordance with the 5th article. They simply report a veto, as they imposed on the start of negotiations by Ukraine regarding the joining of the European Union. And then NATO members will think for two months how to break the Hungarian veto, while the Russian troops will occupy the next five circuits of Ukraine. Is it possible? Of course – says Portnikov.
– And now let's imagine that there are security guarantees in which the United States emphasizes that they will fight directly on the side of Ukraine in the case of a Russian attack. France and Great Britain sign this and there are no Hungary that could block it. It would simply be an agreement at the USA, Ukraine, France and Great Britain. It is more dangerous for Russia than any NATO decisions – notes Portikov.
– Yes, Moscow may allow such guarantees according to which there will be no NATO troops in Ukraine. But I will reveal a small secret: when Finland joined NATO, it was also agreed that there would be no NATO troops in Finland, so as not to irritate Russia. [Dołączyła do NATO] And nothing happened.
